Thomas Dakin Gin

I’ll be totally honest, I bought a bottle of Thomas Dakin gin purely because it’s distilled in Manchester and being a northern girl I just couldn’t resist.

The square bottle and bright red label really give this gin some shelf appeal, it stands out and has you fascinated to try it. The fact that it is 42% also caught my eye when browsing the shelves in my local Booths (if you’re luckily enough to live near to a Booths then you’ll appreciate why it’s my go-to supermarket for gin. They stock some beauties!).

I love gins with a citrus twist, so when I saw that Thomas Dakin gin was infused with orange peel and grapefruit amongst others made me really excited. What really intrigued me though was the infusion of red cole (horseradish to you and me) and how the flavours would come together….

Well it turns out that those flavours come together very well. Very well indeed.

You can smell the botanicals as you raise the glass, and you find yourself picking out the notes before the glass reached your lips. A balloon glass is a must, I say this with every gin I review, but to really appreciate the smell as well as the taste of gin then you need to give those aromas some room. The citrus is sharp and you can definitely pick out the pepper from the red cole.

I tried Thomas Dakin gin with a couple of different types of garnish; grapefruit and orange. I have to say that a slice of a large orange, plenty of ice and a bottle of Fentimans Light tonic was my favourite. Grapefruit was was a little bit too sharp for me, but I can imagine it would be more enjoyable whilst sitting outside in the sun rather than sitting inside on a rainy August evening. It’s the perfect gin for a summer’s day – it’s light and fresh and although the infusions are prominent, they are not overpowering.

Thomas Dakin gin gets a definite thumbs up from me, and well worth the £30 price tag.
