Bathtub Gin

Can you marry a gin? Of course, you can’t, it’s ridiculous, but I’d betroth myself to Bathtub Gin. That’s how much I bloody love it.

Bathtub Gin is quite possibly my favourite gin to see on any drinks shelf. You may have guessed that from the very first sentence of this review. The bottle is just as good as the taste – it’s covered in brown paper and secured at the top with brown string and black wax. It’s unlike any other bottle of gin I’ve ever seen and that’s why I love it.

As for the taste, Bathtub Gin doesn’t let you down. Drinking it from a balloon glass is a must so that the smell of the botanicals excites your senses even before it touches your lips. Once you taste the gin, the citrus infusions tickle your taste buds and leaves you feeling refreshed (so much so that you just want one more glass!). The taste is a subtle mix of fruity and floral, and it works. It really, really works.

After trying Bathtub Gin quite a few times now, I feel I can safely say that it’s not as ginny, if that’s even a word, as a lot of other gins out there. This would make it the perfect gin if you’re just embarking on your gin drinking adventure, or if you were looking for the perfect gin as a gift.

Now let’s talk about tonic and garnish – which let’s face it, are almost as important as the gin itself. With every gin I have, I use my tonic of choice, Fentimans Light Tonic Water (you’ve got to think of the carbs after all). A good tonic is essential to get the best out of your gin and is well worth the extra cost, there’s no point scrimping on the tonic of you’ve splashed out on a quality gin.

For garnish with Bathtub Gin, I prefer a slice of a large orange as I think it enhances the citrus notes of the gin. However, I’ve also tried it with lime, thinking it would do the same and was very wrong. I found that it overpowered the gin and ruined the taste. Cucumber and blackberry were also a good addition, but for me it’s always a good old slice of orange and lots of ice.

If the price tag of Bathtub Gin puts you off (and yes it can be a bit pricey at around £35 for a 70cl bottle if you’ve never tried it before, but that’s why I’m here) don’t let it. I’ve made some of my friends who can take or leave gin, and they really enjoyed it to their surprise. So if you’re considering a bottle of Bathtub Gin, go for it, you won’t be disappointed!

When I drank it

During the day, in the rare Lancashire sunshine

What I used as a garnish

Orange, cucumber or blackberry. Never lime!

Is it worth the money?
