My lovely friend, Kelly, bought me a bottle of Edinburgh Gin’s Rhubarb and Ginger Liqueur as part of my birthday present and I was delighted as soon as I saw it. I’d been thinking about making my own rhubarb gin for a while but had never quite gotten around to it, along with around a million other things.
The gin is a beautiful and delicate pink colour, and you can pretty much imagine the smell before you even open the bottle. Once you do unscrew the top, you are not disappointed; it’s as sweet and as sharp as you’d hope. The smell of the rhubarb is intense. It’s the first thing you notice and then the spice of the ginger comes through. It makes you really, really, want to have a glass straight away. It was about 10am when I opened it, so I refrained from trying it immediately. I must admit, I did consider it though.
I first tried the rhubarb and ginger liqueur with my tonic of choice, Fentimans Light Tonic Water, and it was delicious. However, when I’d been to the shop and come back some ginger ale then things got even better. It is a thing of beauty mixed with ginger ale! The rest of this review is based on drinking the rhubarb and ginger liqueur with ginger ale, because in my opinion, that really is the only thing to mix it with.
When diluted, the smell of rhubarb as you raise the glass to your mouth isn’t as intense, but is still really prominent. Once you swallow your first taste, the combination of the ginger in the gin and the ginger ale warms your mouth and throat while you enjoy the aftertaste of the rhubarb.
I have never attempted to find a garnish for this gin because I simply don’t think it needs one.
At around £18, this gin is an absolute bargain and one I’ll definitely buy again.
When I drank it
In the evening and sat in the sunshine.
What I used as a garnish
